Emulsifiers in Food Linked to Higher Risk of Heart Disease
A group of food additives known as emulsifiers have now been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, according to some new research. These additives are commonly used in processed and ultra-processed foods to improve texture and shelf-life and are widely consumed.
Previous studies have already indicated that certain emulsifiers disrupt the gut microbiome and promote inflammation. The latest research involved over 95,000 adults without heart problems at baseline who reported dietary information and were followed for an average of 7 years.
Overall, researchers found that high intake of specific emulsifiers– including cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, monoglycerides and diglycerides of fatty acids, and trisodium phosphate– was associated with a higher risk of heart problems, specifically coronary heart disease.
The study authors caution that these results need to be replicated in other large studies. However, foods that contain emulsifiers are typically highly processed, which means they are best limited in the diet regardless. (Be sure to see the article below ↓ on foods that commonly contain emulsifiers.)
Common Household Cleaners Emit Hundreds of Hazardous Chemicals
Everyday cleaning products can release hundreds of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when used, a new study has found. These types of compounds are linked to negative health outcomes, including respiratory system damage, neurotoxicity, and increased cancer risk.
The study tested 30 cleaning products in total that included multipurpose cleaners, glass cleaners, air fresheners, and more. Each product was classified as conventional, “green”, or “green” and fragrance-free.
All but one cleaner (which was green, fragrance-free) emitted detectable levels of VOCs with the conventional cleaners accounting for about 75% of total VOC emissions. “Green” cleaners that were fragrance-free emitted the least amount of VOCs, accounting for only 3.8% of the total.
“This study is a wake-up call for consumers, researchers and regulators…“ said Alexis Temkin, Ph.D., a senior toxicologist. “Our findings emphasize a way to reduce exposure to hazardous VOCs – by selecting products that are ‘green,’ especially those that are ‘green’ and ‘fragrance free.’”

8 Common Causes of Brain Fog + Top Natural Solutions
Brain fog is an increasingly common symptom reported by a large number of people and involves a “cloudy” or “foggy” mind and difficulty thinking or focusing. The root cause of brain fog can be hard to pinpoint, but lack of sleep, chronic stress, and a poor diet or food sensitivities are common contributors. Nutrient deficiencies– such as vitamin B, vitamin D, and magnesium– are also a frequent culprit as are hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, and GI disorders. (More)
Medicinal Cannabis May Improve Fatigue, Quality of Life
Medical cannabis is still in the “beginning stages” of being used for chronic health conditions, but some recent research from Australia already shows promising results. Patients who were prescribed and used cannabis for a time period of 3 months experienced improvements in fatigue, anxiety, depression, pain, and overall quality of life. Interestingly, sleep improvements were not noted in the study, even though cannabis was commonly prescribed for insomnia. (More)
12 Signs You’re Eating Too Much Sugar
Added sugars sneak into quite a few foods, and you likely don’t realize how much you’re consuming each day. Sometimes, your body will let you know you’re overdoing it on sugar by sending signals like irritability at the same time every day or acne breakouts. You might also find that “normal” foods don’t taste sweet enough for you or that you often have cravings for sweets. Excess sugar can even contribute to joint pain flare-ups, high blood pressure, and digestive upset. (More)
Being in Good Shape May Lower Medication Use for Mental Health
Getting regular physical activity is linked to a number of health benefits, including better mental health. Some new research confirms this and goes a step further by finding a link between good cardiorespiratory fitness and a decreased likelihood of using antidepressants or anxiety medications. And while it can be very challenging for anyone already struggling with anxiety or depression to find motivation for exercise, research has consistently found that any activity is better than none. Adding even a little aerobic exercise to your daily routine may help. (More)
4 Emerging Benefits of the “Super-Antioxidant” Mushroom, Including Immune Support
Chaga mushrooms are a type of fungus that grows mainly on birch trees throughout the northern hemisphere. They have long been used in traditional medicine, and modern research has now uncovered several potential benefits of these mushrooms, including an ability to boost the immune system and to help protect against liver damage. Chaga is sky-high in antioxidants and, due to this, has also shown anticancer properties in lab studies and an ability to reduce inflammation. (More)

There are so many cells in the human body that it’s hard to count them all, but current estimates put the number at around 30 trillion cells (give or take a few). Cells are divided into about 200 different types that all perform unique functions and have a different structure, size, and shape.
